IIT council to reserve seats for girls

Even as politicians continue to debate the issue of reservations for women in Parliament and legislative assemblies, the students’ affairs council (SAC) at IIT Madras has taken the lead with its proposal to reserve one-third of seats in the council for girl students.
Speaking to IIT and kota on Wednesday, Sree Satwik Gokina, speaker, student affairs council at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Madras said as the institute had seen an increase in the number of girl students, it had become imperative to provide them reservation in SAC.
“We have had long discussions about the reservation issue in our meeting on September 21 in which there were differing opinions, some welcoming and others against it,” he said. He said that the SAC had formed a 15-member committee to interact with students and come out with a report on October 28after which the council would take its final call on the number of seats.
“We are also looking at amending hostel rules to allow girl students to campaign in boys’ hostels after the stipulated entry time. This will help girl students to continue their campaign for long hours in boys’ hostels as we have 17 boys’ hostels and only two for girls,” he added.
It may be pointed out that girl students will occupy institute secretary level positions in the SAC after getting elected in student elections.
Prof L.S. Ganesh, dean (students) at IIT Madras, and an alumnus of the institute who had contributed to drafting a constitution for SAC in his student days, welcomed the proposal. “The number of girl students in the institute has seen a tremendous increase over the years. It has gone up from 100 a decade ago to over 1,000 today. It is important that we reserve some constituencies for girl students in the 50 member SAC,” he said.

The Most Brilliant Students of Kota Ever

Anuj Nagpal(AIR 190):  This guy was the most intelligent person I ever met. In hostel, he was one of the most fun loving guys, he only used to do the assignments of mathematics (only because it was taught to us by the director of the coaching). Shubham Tulsiani says This is quite a common practice among institutes so I would like to address the trends too apart from the personal experiences and I'll also write on one aspect the question didn't explicitly ask  - offers  before  JEE Pre-JEE (class 12th) I had a couple of 'offers' - Some people from Akash Institute came over to my place to 'gift' me books to help me prepare for JEE. All I had to do was - guess what - yes, sign a form ! I was amazed at how insistent they were and despite me saying I didnt need the books and wouldn't sign,  they made me keep the books. They then visited / called me about 5 more times to get my signature (until I finally returned the unused books on their last visit and told my hostel guard to not allow them back).
