Student Counselling at IIT Delhi

The role of counselling in our daily life is far more than any of us would ever acknowledge. We are inclined to believe that our problems have become an indispensable part of our lives and we keep inflicting pain on ourselves and others veiled in this illusion. But in reality the governing dynamics of our minds are much vaster than our limited sense of thinking can ever grasp. If approached in the right way all our suffering and emotional issues can be grappled and done away with. A counsellor is a person who knows about the dynamics of our mind's illusionary sense of self and helps us break free. Sometimes, very rarely a person can counsel himself but more often in hard times the need to speak to someone matured enough to understand our mind is inevitable.
TheStudent Counselling Service (SCS) at IIT-Delhi provides a highly commendable service to its student. The counsellor Mrs. Rupa Murghai is highly educated, experienced and skilled in matters of the mind. The office is frequented by students and it always works wonders for them when they have given up all hopes. The video below illustrates its activity very lucidly and beautifully. Do have
a look.
Here is an interview of Mrs. Rupa Murghai about issues a fresher generally encounter in first year:

1.What is the purpose of the SCS? What facilities does it offer to students?
Ans: Student counseling service is an independent and confidential student friendly center wherein support and help is provided by a professional counselor to the students of the Institute.
It offers counseling and an ongoing friendly assistance to focus, share and address concerns and specific issues that may trouble an individual.

2. Freshers have to deal with a lot of things when they come to IIT. The separation from their families, living on their own, making new friends...all of it is a big change. Any advice for the first few weeks on campus?
Ans: First few weeks on campus may bring in apprehensions and concerns of adjusting to the mew environment and peer pressure. Students should try to get involved with the new group. Take interest and try to familiarize them to the system. Get to know the faculty, staff and other campus resources. Work out mutually beneficial ways of accommodating and adjusting with room-mates.

3. The moment a fresher step into IITD he comes across an unprecedented sense of freedom. This freedom transforms him entirely over the course of time. How should the student use his freedom so that the imminent transformation isn't for the worse?
Ans: Freedom may be a welcome change but it will surely bring a transformation of the student in the new environment. The students would do well to take personal accountability and responsibility with the freedom. Be reasonable and average out, balance academics and leisure. Take care to keep away from toxins to preserve mental and physical health.

4. Under what circumstances should a student pay you a visit? How would a student know he needs counselling?
Ans: Any student is welcome to walk into the center whenever they have a concern that is bothersome or problematic which needs to be resolved.

A student can recognize the need for counseling when he/she feels that he cannot resolve a problem with the help of friends, parents, elders or by himself, that's when he can seek professional support.

5. Many of the students don't go for counselling even if they need to because of the social stigma attached to it. What would you like to say about this matter?
Ans: Yes there is still a certain amount of hesitation among some students due to social stigma attached to it. However SCS tries to orient, sensitize and create awareness among students through outreach programs and workshops. In the last seven years it is encouraging to note the increase in self-referral and visits to the center by students.

6. You must come across students every year having one or the other problem. What are the major and most frequent problems you have seen students facing in past few years? Any interesting case (no need for any names!) where a student has shown considerable improvement after counselling?
Ans: Some of the problems faced by students are- decline in academic enthusiasm, internet addiction, low self-esteem, loneliness, problem in time management, relationships and break ups , home sickness, stress and anxiety.

Case:
X was a new entrant to IIT. He did not have many friends. Felt lonely. First minor got him an average result. He got disappointed. He was told by others to "chill maar'. He decided to have some fun. Made a girl friend. His grades fell due to shift of focus. Girl friend opted for his friend, felt ditched. X started smoking, felt left behind in academics. He developed low self esteem and starting isolating himself. He visited the counseling center to take support to manage his emotions and the feeling of rejection. "Why did this have to happen to me?"
It happens.

Sessions began. His visits were regular, finally took charge of his life. He has graduated from IIT with a good result. He has a good job and sometimes drops in to say "Hi"!
