Education needs to be re-invented, connected to industry, Rahul Gandhi says

The Indian education system needs to be "re-invented" with a connect drawn between  higer education  and the needs of the industry, said Congress vice-president  Rahul gandhi  here on Saturday. Answering a query at the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FCCI) here, a confident-sounding Gandhi said in India education and industry are thought of in two separate ways. But on the other hand, modern university and modern education are "essentially a network that connects industry, connects government, NGOs, students with a connect point within the university", he said. Gandhi said some of the Indian universities, like the IITs (Indian Institutes of Technology), are exceptional , but India lacks the level of networking and modern knowledge systems required. He said it is time to establish a connect between industry and higher education. "What role does industry have in our higher education? There is a deep connect, but there is a disconn

The multi-million dollar packages are back with network and services giant Google hiring two BITS Pilani students for a Rs 1.44 crore annual package, which is the highest Google has offered anyone in the country. This package has also become the highest offer made to any Indian student in 2013. The next best offer of Rs 1.3 crore was bagged by 12 IIT-Kanpur students last week. Thoppilan Romal Devassy and Kannan Sunder both natives of Mumbai are seventh semester students of the computer science branch in BITS, Pilani and have created history by being offered a whopping $ 2,35000 annual package (more than 1.44 Cr) by Google. "No doubt, this is unimaginable for me to get placed in the most desired and named company of the world. My innings with Google will begin in the summer of 2014 in Mount View, US," said Sunder over the phone from Rajasthan. His views were echoed by Devassy. Google has also shortlisted another student from BITS but are yet to issue the offer letter

Delhi HC rejects IIT's plea against Subramanian Swamy

The Delhi High Court on Tuesday rejected IIT, Delhi's plea to dismiss Subramanian Swamy's civil suit claiming that the institute owes him more than Rs 70 lakhs for the services he rendered during his tenure there as an Assistant Professor between 1972 and 1991. Justice Manmohan Singh dismissed the plea after both IIT and Swamy failed to settle the issue out of court. The Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi, (IIT-D) had approached high court against a city court's order agreeing to hear Swamy's plea seeking recovery of the alleged dues of Rs 19 lakh along with interest of 18 percent from February 1991. In its plea, the petitioner took the ground that his plea was time-barred and beyond the jurisdiction of the court. The lower court had on February 26, 2012 agreed to hear Swamy's plea and dismissed IIT's application seeking dismissal of his civil suit on the ground that it was time-barred and beyond the jurisdiction of the court. After IIT-JEE, what next?

Many candidates who join IITs have no clarity about the courses they opt for and what IIT holds for them in the coming four years Each year over 9,000 candidates qualify the toughest entrance examination in the world to gain a seat at the prestigious Indian Institutes of Technology but most candidates have little knowledge of what exactly the IITs hold for them. For almost all of them a seat in the IITs is a passport to success. In all this, the primary reason for getting into the IITs — an engineering degree from the world's best undergraduate institution — is lost. What compounds this issue is the lack of clarity among the candidates as to what next after clearing JEE. Most end up taking up courses at the IITs without a regard for their interests, without the slightest knowledge of what they are going to study for the next four years. In essence, most candidates end up selecting their undergraduate majors based on what the previous year rank holder did or which IIT is c

50% of IIT entrants not from coaching classes

Image
After the Joint Entrance Exam (JEE) results, coaching classes get busy spinning success stories. Each student who makes it to the hallowed Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) may just be reduced to a rank, but it is their golden ticket to netting more candidates for admission. But information collected by the tech colleges reveals that close to half of those who make their mark in the entrance test prepare for the exam on their own. The IITs ask every student who takes the JEE whether he/she prepared for the test "on his own or via other methods", which, in short, covers all sorts of coaching provided. This includes classroom series, distance learning, referring to tutorial notes or appearing for mock tests. Candidates are also informed that their selection would be based on the marks they have scored, irrespective of their preparation method. Data provided by candidates shows that about 50% students said they studied on their own. Their share has altered

Startups jump to top of placements queue at IITs MUMBAI: Life can come full circle in just a year. Advitiya Sharma sat uncomfortably in his dark suit as he pitched himself to top companies at IIT-Bombay last year. This week, Sharma was back on campus, in informal tees—as befits an engineer-turned-entrepreneur—picking up students from the Class of 2014. The co-founder of Housing.com, a campus-born company, seemed at home sharing space at the IITs with global tech biggies like Google and Oracle—them with their bulge-bracket salary offers and promises of overseas postings—on the opening day of campus placements. The house-hunting portal snared 45 IIT graduates during top slots at campuses in Delhi, Mumbai, Kharagpur and Guwahati. The mating season spreads across five months at engineering colleges; they have traditionally been fertile ground for startups in search of fresh talent and energy. This year though, a new pecking order appears to have emerged. Several

IIT-Delhi, JNU get CAG rap for failing to avail rebate on bills   NEW DELHI: Government auditor CAG today rapped premier institutes like IIT Delhi and JNU for failing to avail rebate to the tune of 10 per cent on account of rain water harvesting in their campuses. The Delhi Jal Board (DJB) in a notification which came into affect from January 2010 had said that government institutes would be eligible for a 10 per cent rebate on the total amount of water bills subject to the existence of functional rain water harvesting structure. IIT Delhi had 28 rainwater harvesting pits in its premises since 2000. However, the audit observed that it did not "claim rebate of 10 per cent on monthly water bills during January 2010 to July 2012 resulting in over payment of Rs 64.29 lakh to DJB". Similarly, Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) had eight rain water harvesting systems functioning in its premises since 2005 and was eligible for availing 10 per cent discount on its
After Unnao, seer seeks IIT Kanpur's help for gold hunt in Fatehpur The seer whose "dream" set the government digging for 1,000 tonnes of gold, buried underneath a dilapidated fort in Unnao in Uttar Pradesh, Thursday moved a court to conduct a survey to find another 2,500 tonnes gold at a village in the state's Fatehpur district. Shobhan Sarkar, through his disciple Om Baba, approached the Allahabad High Court and sought permission to conduct a survey followed by excavation to find 2,500 tonnes of gold in Adampur village of Fatehpur district. The seer pleaded that he would get the survey done at his expense and has, in fact, roped in a Kanpur-based company, ISM, for the purpose. A sum of about Rs.78,000 has been deposited with the company for the survey and Rs.85,000 for transportation of the team and necessary equipments. The seer has also claimed paying R s. 3.35 lakh to the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kanpur for assistance in the survey. Counsel for th

IITs agree to get accredited; JEE format to continue NEW DELHI: After dilly-dallying for years, IITs have agreed to get themselves accredited by the National Board of Accreditation (NBA), the premier accreditation body in the country. However, considering their high academic standards, IITs have been given the freedom to carry out the review themselves and submit the report to NBA . IITs have also been asked to work towards reinforcing the brand so that it has better chances of making it to prestigious 'QS Ranking' of best institutions. IITs have also decided to continue with this year's format of JEE (advanced) test without any change. Talking to reporters at the end of the IIT Council meeting on Monday, HRD minister M M Pallam Raju said IITs agreeing for accreditation would help India become a part of the Washington Accord, an international agreement among accrediting agencies of 14 nations that recognizes engineering degree programmes of each other.
